Tractors, generators and pumps are best compared using litres per operating hour. Pickups, trucks and road vehicles can be compared using litres per kilometre. Separating those measures avoids misleading comparisons across different kinds of equipment.
A higher figure does not automatically mean there is a fault, but it gives managers a clear place to start. Workload, operator behaviour, servicing, tyres, leaks and changing field conditions can then be checked against the recorded history.

The two consumption calculations
Litres per hour = litres issued ÷ operating-hour change. Litres per kilometre = litres issued ÷ odometer change.

From a high rate to a useful investigation
